Choosing an Arma 3 server hosting provider
Last updated: August 9, 2020
If you’re looking for an ARMA 3 server provider you should consider at least the following important points (expanded below):
- Server pricing
- DLC and game modes
- Additional features that you may want to add to your server
ARMA 3 has a pretty high initial cost for a basic server in comparison to most games. A 10 person server is one of the most expensive 10 player servers you can rent across all games.
A basic starting package will cost around £10/$12.60, meaning each player will cost £1/$1.26.
The game itself is very resource heavy which explains the relevant server costs, however the server can get very expensive if you want to add additional extras.
Most game hosting companies will set the size of the server in increments 5 or 10. The price per player will gradually get cheaper the larger the server you rent. If you have a lot of friends or know you need a lot of space then you can bring the cost per player right down by buying in bulk.
Typically game hosting companies will give you the option to upgrade your memory allocation. Most standard packages start with between 5GB and 8GB. If you don’t wipe the server regularly then you may need to upgrade your allocation. This is typically required if you run a large 40 + server.
CPU clock speeds
If you’re looking for better clock speeds, most providers will give you the option to add additional Ghz. A standard package usually comes with around 3.8Ghz.
Hard Disk Space
If you’re looking for an additional server performance you can ask to upgrade the standard SSD Drive. This will improve the server’s performance. However most casual players will not notice this feature.
A standard package will provide you with a normal CPU priority. However you can choose to increase this to high or real time, it will cost you a little bit extra but this can be a great feature if you have a very full server with high CPU demands. The company will prioritise your server over the other servers on the same unit.
Game and mod switching
Watch out for additional costs when it comes to game or mod switching. Most hosting companies will do this for free.
However I have seen that cheaper companies will try to charge for this service in order to make up for cheaper initial prices.
I have noticed recently that some companies have started charging for premium support. By paying an extra fee you will gain priority over other users. This means your support tickets will be answered first (theoretically). If you require constant support then it is definitely worth paying the money for. If you don’t use the support I wouldn’t spend the extra money.
Servers are very customisable which makes it great for both new and experienced players as they can choose a package that meets their needs. However be aware that it can get very expensive very quickly if you don’t know what to add to your service. If you are a new player just go for a basic package with no extras. You can always add extras in the future.
It can be difficult to assess a company’s support without trying them first. However you can use other players’ feedback to get some idea on a company’s reputation and quality of support.
How to check if a company has good support
All companies have reviews that customers have left either on their own website or third party websites, like TrustPilot or Google Reviews. Check for honest reviews on these websites and see what their customers have to say. Avoid companies with lots of negative reviews.
Reddit and Steam Forums
Most threads are permanently fixed so you can look at both old and new discussions to get an idea of a company’s history over the years. You may be able to reach out to users that have previously posted as well for more information.
Do you have friends that also play ARMA 3? Ask your friends if they have ever owned a server before. If so, who did they rent from and why? Ask them about their experience and if they would suggest a certain provider to you.
It can be hard choosing a server provider on price alone so taking into account other players’ feedback and reviews is important. It will help you find a more trustworthy company to rent a server from as there are plenty of poorly run companies trying to win your business.
What DLC and maps do they support?
Arma 3 has tons of extra content in the form of DLC (downloadable content), maps and additional game modes you can play. When choosing a host you should first consider what type of ARMA 3 server you want.
Most hosting companies will provide the standard vanilla (non-modded) experience but only a few specialized companies will offer everything.
The most played servers I see online are:
- Altis Life
- Breaking Point
- Desolation Redux
- Epoch Mod
- Exile Mod
Be wary that some hosts may try to charge you more for using these mods. In my experience it shouldn’t cost anything extra as it does not require any extra resources. As long as you have the DLC or mod already you will be able to access the server.
If you’re ever unsure about a hosting company offering the mod you’re looking for, I would suggest talking to the support team. Ask if they are able to easily add this to your server package. Also check if it will cost extra. This will help you avoid any hidden costs.
